Caddyshack in the year’80 was Ramis directorial debut and was a masterpiece in its own right. Ramiss film, Year One comes close to Caddyshack in spirit but not necessarily in humor or brilliance. Thankfully it doesnt pay too much attention to the plot or the characters, but its a careless, laughably stupid movie that can send you into convulsions of laughter during some parts of the movie.
The Year One movies protagonist, Zed, is played by the hilarious Jack Black and Zed is a terrible hunter and stays with his primitive tribe in a jungle. Michael Cera plays Oh, Zeds best friend and throughout the movie his femininity is what makes him the butt of all jokes. June Diane Raphael plays Maya who is the love interest of Zed and Juno Temple plays Eema, who is the love interest of Oh.
The goal for these two men is to return as men and secure their respective ladys love and the Year one movie ensures you have a giggle just about every step of their way. Unfortunately however, the dull and ubiquitous pee, poo and penis jokes are a plenty in this movie that could have been cut off because we have all gotten bored of it.
Jack Black carries the entire Year One movie on his sturdy shoulders and there is something so cryptic, yet satisfying about him. His impeccable style will by no means be matched. This style of his is very unique but it is entertainment at its best. His lines can make a toddler or a playwright howl with laughter.
Jack Black has done an amazing job in the movie and his very able co-actors Michael, June and Juno support him wonderfully throughout. Both Black and June complement each other perfectly. Other performances worthy of mention are delivered by Vinnie Jones, Oliver Patt and others. These roles are not really heavy. They appear for a few minutes but pull it off with lan. The year one movie shares its screenplay writers with successful television show, The Office.
